This ready-to-teach in-service package includes all the pieces needed to teach a 25-minute in-service.

In-Service Topic "Understanding Palliative Care and the Five Domains of Pain"
Palliative care, which is often confused with hospice care, is an essential element of person-centered care, as mandated by new CMS regulations. While most palliative care programs focus purely on physical pain relief, the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm here instruct on their holistic, groundbreaking palliative care program that begins immediately upon admission to the nursing home. Holistic palliative care provides a network of caregivers who are attuned to resident needs that will drastically enhance their quality of life. Caregivers will learn the following topics:

    • The difference between palliative care and hospice care—and what palliative care is not
    • The five domains of pain: emotional, physical, spiritual, psychiatric, and familial
    • How to assess each resident for each domain of pain
    • Compassionate listening and communication techniques for caregivers

This in-service is a downloadable zip file and includes:

    • Access to watch recorded video (internet access required)
    • Presentation slides and script (Microsoft PowerPoint File)
