    In-Service Topic "Understanding Incontinence Behavior"
Incontinence can be a difficult problem to solve, and few other problems contribute so directly to poor resident self-image and isolation, which are major contributors to depression. Additionally, incontinence problems contribute to more caregiver stress than almost any other type of personal care. Incontinence also leads to UTIs and other health problems if not managed carefully. This in-service details ways to solve incontinence, leading to greatly increased resident quality of life and lower stress for caregivers. Caregivers will learn the following:

    • The three main factors that contribute to incontinence
    • How dementia can increase incontinence
    • Practical behavioral interventions caregivers can use
    • Early symptoms of UTIs and signs of toileting needs
    • Facilitating independence for residents and the “positive affect” technique

This in-service is a downloadable zip file and includes:

    • Access to watch recorded video (internet access required)
    • Presentation slides and script (Microsoft PowerPoint File)
    • Presentation handout as slides and notes (PDF)
    • 4-page summary of presentation (PDF)
