In-Service Topic "Treating Depression by Activating Positive Behavior"
Depression is an enormous problem in nursing homes, affecting up to 90% of residents’ quality of life. Depressed residents are more difficult to care for because depression produces either withdrawal or aggressive behaviors and, in some cases, leads to a worsening of illness. Recent studies on a technique called Behavior Activation show that this method has proven to be far more effective in treating depression than are drug interventions. Behavior Activation can also improve caregiver job satisfaction and teamwork. It is a simple plan that anyone can do. Caregivers will learn Behavior Activation steps as well as the following topics:

    • Reasons for depression and why most depression in nursing homes is situational
    • How to recognize depression
    • How to initiate brief one-on-one activities (Behavior Activation) that help cure depression from the “outside in”
    • The six steps of Behavior Activation to be used with supervision
    • Suggestions of times of day and types of activities that work best for Behavior Activation
