In-Service Topic "The New Resident with Dementia"
Moving into a nursing home is often a time of incredible loss and stress that leads to worsening of symptoms for people with dementia. Novelty, loss of control, and reduced social contact are major stressors that are difficult for an aging brain to deal with. In this in-service, caregivers practice an exercise that puts them in the place of the new dementia resident in order to understand and empathize with him or her. After this in-service, caregivers will be able to do the following:

    • Understand and have compassion for the challenges of the new dementia resident
    • Understand why the disease process of dementia makes transitions more difficult
    • Know which kinds of memory are lost in dementia and which are preserved
    • Use priming to prompt memory, which helps dementia residents know what is coming next and feel secure
    • Understand person-centered care techniques in activities of daily living to help residents’ transition

This in-service is a downloadable zip file and includes:

    • Access to watch recorded video (internet access required)
    • Presentation slides and script (Microsoft PowerPoint File)
