The Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm recently formalized a groundbreaking Palliative Care program that raises new standards for palliative and end-of-life care in the United States. Kaplan Multimedia, Inc. teamed up with the Carmelite Sisters to produce a thirteen-minute film capturing the hallmarks of the program titled “The Difference is Love.” The film’s excellence was recognized with a nomination for a 2017 Suncoast Emmy Award under the category “Societal Concerns.”

New Website Helps to Promote Carmelite Palliative Care

​In June 2017, the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm, aided by the Avila Institute of Gerontology, launched a new website dedicated to palliative care. The Carmelite Sisters’ philosophy has always taught the concept of palliative care and it is the Sisters’ goal that the new website,, help residents, families and caregivers understand palliative care and its importance in providing holistic, person-centered care.

Not only did we work with the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) to create a palliative care education program for the facilities sponsored, co-sponsored or served by the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm, we are working to help all implement successful palliative care programs.

AIG Presents Palliative Care at the CHA Pre-Assembly

​On June 4th, 2016 the Avila Institute of Gerontology had the privilege to once again be a pre-assembly at the annual Catholic Healthcare Association Assembly in Orlando, FL. Our five-hour seminar "Effective Palliative Care in Long-term Care" focused on palliative care and how to implement and maintain a palliative program in long-term care facilities. We’ve been part of this assembly for many years and we were very grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a wonderful event. We were also participated at the exhibit hall where Director, Sr. M. Peter Lillian Di Maria, O.Carm along with faculty, Sr. Annelle Fitzpatrick, CSJ and AIG staff member Erin Pietrak had the pleasure to meet and discuss the many educational programs for long-term care that AIG offers.

RECAP: October Long-term Care Conference

AIG’s Annual Conference, “Building Relationships Throughout the Continuum of Care,” took place October 12-14 at the Carmelite Motherhouse in Germantown, NY. Sisters and employees of homes served by the Carmelite Sisters other various long-term care organizations gathered to examine topics in-depth relating to holistic care. Our lifespan is increasing and medicine is advancing, so it is paramount to ensure that we care for our elderly in a way that gives them compassion and dignity. With zeal for this common goal, the October Care Conference participants assembled.

Palliative Care Program at Calvary Hospital

The Avila Institute of Gerontology coordinated a three-day educational program with Calvary Hospital on Palliative Care from June 22-14, 2015. Calvary hospital’s philosophy was developed and put into practice under the supervision of esteemed Dr. Michael Brescia, MD, Executive Medical Director of Calvary Hospital. The three-day program aimed to share principles of effective, compassionate palliative care used at Calvary that enhances the quality and dignity of life for those facing end-of-life issues and life threatening illnesses.
