In June 2016, a new group of students completed the Geriatric Spiritual Care Program offered by the Avila Institute of Gerontology, Inc. Each month, January to April, the students spent one weekend at Avila in Germantown, NY to receive training from multiple experts and faculty in Spiritual Care. Topics focus on spiritual care, suffering, listening and ethics. In May, the students fulfilled a week of clinical experience with supervision at a long-term care facility Carmel Richmond in Staten Island, NY which is served by the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm. The students were celebrated and given awards during a special award ceremony in June.
On Sunday June 14, 2015 the Avila Institute was proud to award seven new graduates their certificates of completion for the Geriatric Spiritual Care Program during a special mass and award ceremony. Coming from different areas and levels of healthcare, all attended the program to better minister and care more effectively for the spiritual, psychological, emotional and physical needs of the elderly. They are excited to take their developed sensitivity, understanding, and spirituality into their day-to-day care of the elderly.
A Spiritual Caregiver is someone who attends to the spiritual needs of people, in this case the elders we serve in long-term care. We all know how a life crisis can make people feel confusion, denial and despair.
