Programs

Palliative care is holistic and compassionate care for people living with a variety of illnesses. It is care to relieve pain, symptoms and stress of serious illness and provides hope to live life as full as possible. This two day seminar will discuss the benefits of palliative care; how to assess your residents’ pain and control it; ethics and ministry; spiritual healing; special attention for those with Dementia; the care of the dying as it relates to the Jewish, Islamic and Christian religions; and how to assess your facility’s Palliative Care Program. Speakers include Rev. Myles N. Sheehan SJ, MD; Mary T. O'Neill, BCC, LMT, D.Min; Sr. M. Peter Lillian Di Maria, O.Carm.; and Sr. Annelle Fitzpatrick, CSJ, PhD.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Discuss the difference between Palliative Care and End of Life Care (Hospice Care).

  • Discuss appropriate assessments and interventions for the five domains of pain.

  • Discuss the dying process.

  • Discuss the ethics of caring for frail elders at the end of life.

  • Discuss spiritual assessments for helping to transform feelings of anxiety into hope.

  • Discuss how ethics influences our ministry of care.
  • Discuss the ethical concerns of using, withholding or withdrawing specific treatments while caring for residents.

  • Discuss the importance of accurately diagnosing, assessing and treating persons with cognitive loss.

  • Discuss the importance of training, education and support for the person with dementia, family and caregivers.

  • Discuss the care of the dying in
    the Jewish and Islamic traditions.

  • Discuss providing comfort and spiritual assistance to a Jewish or Islamic family during death and dying.

  • Discuss assessing your palliative care program to ensure optimum comfort is provided to each
    resident.
  • Discuss how to implement information received from assessing your palliative care program.
  • Identify barriers to providing quality Palliative Care to residents.
  • Discuss solutions and caregiver roles in the realization of excellence in Palliative Care.
