Designing Dementia Specific Programs

Resident Centered care begins with understanding that each person is a unique individual with unique needs. Programs that meet the needs of all Residents, especially those with dementia, are best achieved through appropriate assessments and understanding. The presenter will discuss proper assessment procedures, innovative education techniques, and program development. An introduction into Engineered Music as innovative implementation tool will be discussed.

Dementia Simulation a Powerful Training Tool?

Starting and maintaining Resident Centered care requires caregivers to emphasize with what all their residents are going through, especially those with dementia. Participants are introduced to the technique called Dementia Simulation. This training helps caregivers understand emotionally the many constraints and limitations dementia places on people suffering from dementia.

Dementia Basics: Aging & the Slippery Slope

Building on the experience of dementia simulation, a basic understanding of brain function is critical in dealing with the challenges to providing excellent dementia care. Mr. Norwood's discusses the new approach to understanding dementia, which is based in neurology and is a direct result of the latest developments in neural imaging.

The approaches described in the morning are only as successful as the team who is to implement them. Dr. Lambrech will present a very logical approach to the team process from communication techniques to evaluating the effectiveness of the team and putting a strong team together. An interactive session will take place that incorporates the team techniques in regards to providing positive solutions to challenging behaviors that residents with dementia may portray.
