There are many causes of Dementia and understanding the cause is crucial in deciding how to minister to each person based on his/her individual diagnosis. This seminar discusses the different types of Dementia, care issues that arise, recent studies and ways to enhance family visits and family concerns.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Discuss the difference between delirium, depression and dementia.

  • Discuss different causes of dementia and symptoms specific to four common dementias.

  • Discuss behavorial and psychological changes typically associated with common dementias.

  • Discuss non-pharmacologic interventions that assist the individual with common dementias to function at the highest level.

  • Discuss the benefits and risks of Pharmaceutical interventions available for common dementias.

  • Discuss challenges that families face when admitting a family member with dementia to a facility.

  • Discuss positive interventions for families to implement during visits with a loved one who has dementia.
